How to prepare for an Eye Examination

1. Abstain from wearing contact lenses

Before the examination, for the following amount of time:
Soft lenses: At least 3 days before the examination
Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP) lens: At least 7 days before the examination
Hard lenses: At least 7 days before the examination

During this period, the person receiving treatment can wear spectacles instead.

Why must contact lenses be removed before examination?
Contact lenses come into direct contact with the cornea. After a long period of wear, the shape of the cornea may alter, and time is needed for it to get back to its natural shape. By not allowing enough time for the eye to readjust itself, the examination readings may not be accurate.

2. The following parameters will be measured during your examination

• Detailed ocular history and general medical history
• Measurement of your pupil and iris sizes.
• Corneal Topography (mapping of your cornea)
• Corneal thickness
• Fundus examination by slit lamp
• Auto refraction (computerized measurement)
• 1st Refraction (prescription measurement)
• Intra-ocular pressures
• Testing for dry eyes
