Eyelid surgery, medically referred to as blepharoplasty, is designed to remove fat, excess skin and muscle from the eyelids. This procedure is designed for those wanting to look younger, more refreshed and more alert. Even the slightest changes to the eyelids can help them look younger and vibrant.
Frequently asked questions:
What are some of the most common benefits of this surgery?
- Improving peripheral vision
- Gaining a fresher, more alert appearance
- Restoring a youthful eyelid appearance
- Enhancing overall appearance
- Gaining a boost in self-confidence
How is blepharoplasty performed?
This procedure usually takes one to three hours to perform, depending on the extent of the operation. Patients will be given local anesthesia, meaning they will be awake during the operation but numb to pain.
How the surgeon performs the operation depends upon the type of eyelid being treated. In upper eyelid surgery, the doctor creates an incision that follows the natural lines of the eyelids. Working through the incisions, the doctor removes a crescent of excess skin and muscle, and any fat. The surgeon then closes the incisions with fine sutures, which will leave nearly invisible scars.
What can I expect after surgery?
After surgery, the physician will lubricate your eyes with ointment to reduce dryness in this area. Your vision may be blurred temporarily from the ointment.
The first evening after surgery, you should rest quietly with your head elevated. It will help to apply cold compresses to your eyelids. Although you can be up almost immediately, you should limit your activities.
What is the recovery period like?
The recovery period for eyelid surgery is approximately two weeks. In that time, patients must follow their surgeon's post-operative instructions. This will help promote better healing, reduce chances of complications, and to add more comfort during recovery. For example, eyedrops may be recommended because the eyelids might be dry, and eyes may burn or itch. Also, patients who wear contact lenses must avoid wearing them during the recovery period. Because the eyes will temporarily be sensitive to sunlight, wind, and other irritants, wearing sunglasses and sunblock is highly recommended. Patients will also be instructed on how to clean their eyes while recovering.
What is the long-term outcome like for most people?
The more alert, youthful look that this surgery provides is usually long lasting. Thin scars may remain slightly pink for six months or so, but can easily be concealed with makeup. They eventually fade to a thin, nearly invisible white line.
After undergoing eyelid surgery, your appearance is enhanced because the upper eyelids are no longer drooping and the skin under the eyes is smooth and firm. The results can last for many years, and in many cases, are permanent.
What are the risks involved with this procedure?
Many people have undergone eyelid surgery, with very few complications reported. However, eyelid surgery is still a very delicate procedure; one mistake could cost one's vision. Hypothyroidism, Graves' disease, dry eye, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease and diabetes are just some of the medical conditions that can make eyelid surgery even more risky. A detached retina or glaucoma are also causes for concern. Speak with your ophthalmologist and cosmetic surgeon to gain a more thorough understanding of the risks.
You can help minimize certain risks by following the advice and instructions of your plastic surgeon, both before and after your eyelid surgery. Pre-existing conditions can also put you at risk. They include thyroid problems such as hypothyroidism, insufficient tear production or dryness of the eye, elevated blood pressure or other circulatory disorders, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. Caution should be exercised if you have ophthalmic problems, or other serious medical condition(s). In this case, your surgeon may require a clearance from your general practitioner or other physician.
