The Strip Harvesting method involves removing the follicular units to be transplanted as one group, from the donor area. By this way the follicular units are kept intact in their genetic form and prevent the individual hair follicles from being damaged. Each follicular unit contains one to four hairs, the average being 2.2 hairs per follicular unit.

These follicular units are then dissected with great care under microscopes equipped with fibre optics so as to avoid the application of heat to the follicles. These follicular units are preserved in a special solution at the right temperature until the doctor prepares the recipient sites on the patient. They are then placed with great care in to the bald or thinning areas of the scalp, called the recipient area.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is a method of obtaining donor hair where individual follicular units are harvested directly from the donor area, without the need for a linear incision. In this hair restoration procedure, a 1-mm punch is used to make a small circular incision in the skin around the upper part of the follicular unit, which is then extracted directly from the scalp. Very few clinics offer FUE due to its labor intensive nature and lack of expertise. Many clinics claim to offer FUE but actually use machines (e.g. Omnigraft) to extract the donor hair, with significantly poorer results. Advantages of FUE method:

• No linear scar
• Decrease healing time in the donor area
• Useful for those with a greater risk of donor scarring
• Useful for repairing donor scars that cannot be excised
• No limitations on strenuous exercise after the procedure
  • Less post-op discomfort
• Provides an alternative when the scalp is too tight for a strip excision
• Extends the dimensions of the donor area
• Enables one to harvest finer hair from the nape of the neck to be used at the hairline or for eyebrows
• Makes it theoretically possible to harvest non-scalp hair
  • Ex. beard or body hair
• More useful when a limited number of grafts are needed

Disadvantages of FUE method:

• Size of session is limited - may require multiple sessions for large areas, increasing cost
• FUE takes longer to perform
• Generally more expensive than strip harvesting
